Welcome aboard!

You can check the link in my signature for lots of good information on getting started with Linux. You can learn more about Linux from forums such as this, reading books and articles, and using the operating system, especially if you start digging down into the inner workings of the system itself.
Best of luck to you with all of it.oz

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

Welcome to the forums. As mentioned earlier, go to Distrowatch.com, and check out the different distros. You can burn live cd's of most of them to try without installing to your hard drive. See which ones you like, and which ones play nice with your hardware. Have fun.

I'd suggest either a virtual machine in an operating system your familiar with or an old computer and getting your hands dirty. This way you can make the transition to Linux smoothly.
Every different distro offers its own unique benefits. My first steps were figuring out which distro was right for me, I started researching different distros and selected one with my requirements in mind.
Also, there are distros out there that are pre-configured "appliances" eg firewalls/proxy servers...although there is not much to be learnt from these (except maybe some minor configuration), they do offer excellent functionality.
Cheers,
Griffo
