The CRUX Handbook looks like it might be more condensed and simplified than it was the last time I installed CRUX (5 or 6 years ago). I'm thinking that it's probably still a good idea to print it out before installing for those not familiar with the installation routine for CRUX.

It sure is. I've been through the process many times since CRUX 2.3 and always like to have the handbook close at hand. Aside from configuring files the process is really easy. Provided the CD and partition(s) are created, it's as simple as:
(a) Fire up the CD and loggin as root. No pass required.
(b) mount the target partition(s) for install with mount /dev/sda? /mnt
(c) type setup and choose what to install. core is essential but I always install all of opt and xorg too. The install takes a few minutes and is successful when you see "0 errors."
That's it! Next, chroot in by typing setup-chroot and proceed to configuration and kernel compile.

Downloaded .iso image and planning to install tomorrow morning.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Well, I won't - not for a while anyhow. I've just upgraded Debian from stable to testing, reinstated a whole bunch of things that got lost in the upgrade, learned how to use GRUB2, put what I learned into a HOWTO and posted it in Debian Forums, rebuilt my custom kernel, and got it to boot after three attempts and to play nicely with evdev/xorg after five. I'm exhausted. And I was just thinking "Well, that's all over and I'm back on an even keel again," when I find a notice in my mailbox telling me that there's a new Crux to be downloaded, burned and installed. This is all too much like hard work.
One day. But not today."I'm just a little old lady; don't try to dazzle me with jargon!"

CRUX is currently back up to #23 on the charts at DistroWatch:
DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.
Maybe it'll reach the top 10 for at least a few days.

Dan's right about you Casper... You'll probly have it up and running with multiple DE's before any of us! Be like a night time project for you!

And hazel... after dealing with a re-vamp of your Deb install, I wouldn't want to deal with anything either. You can always piece it together, though.Jay

Installed and adding apps at the moment.
Cheated a bit ... running grub2 from my Arch setup & pinched .config for kernel from my Gentoo setup. Also installed all packages rather than just core.
Installed to an ext4 partition but when I tried to boot got error saying CONFIG_LBDAF needed to be enabled (went back into kernel config and enabled it and recompiled and the system boots).
enabled contrib and added romster to /etc/prt-get.conf so I now have icewm (han did not seem to work)
... having said that ended up doing a manual download of icewm from their website and cp across to /usr/ports/romster/icewm.Code:# the following line enables the user maintained contrib collection prtdir /usr/ports/contrib ### my additions below # han - icewm and themes prtdir /usr/ports/romster
