Ubuntu changes its desktop from GNOME to Unity

It should be interesting to see how this works out for desktop users:

Ubuntu changes its desktop from GNOME to Unity - Computerworld Blogs

Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu and the company behind it, Canonical, surprised the hundreds of Ubuntu programmers at the Ubuntu Developers Summit when he announced that the next release of the popular Linux operating system, Ubuntu 11.04, would use Unity as the default desktop interface because "users want Unity as their primary desktop."
I've never experienced Unity on any computer so can't speak on it either way.

Ubuntu's hardware requirements keep increasing, and leaving older computers behind. Wonder what the requirements will be for 11.04 with Unity?

Apparently Unity needs compositing enabled. So I am going out on a limb and think it will be useless is you don't have proprietary drivers installed.

Glad I learned Icewm and Fluxbox. I guess/hope you can uninstall Unity (without breaking install) and install Gnome thru Synaptic in Ubuntu 11.

Does that help with ram, or just HD space?

Depends on what you install afterwards. It's a minimal system with no GUI to start.

Unity is great on a small netbook sized screen but I can't see it scaling well.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

I don't like the netbook edition interface at all. I'm just about at the point of switching to Linux Mint Debian Edition. I've been running of from an SDHC, and it runs well on my netbook. Ubuntu is becoming too unstable on it for everyday use, but LMDE is one of the most stable distros I've tried.

There are some things I like about the 11.04 release but, I am not sure if Unity Desktop
is one of them. I am not totally computer illiterate but something as simple as changing
appearances and preferences has become impossible to do, even the help is no help. I will
keep trying because I have been a fan for a while.
