Linux on SPARC
Hi,
I've been working with Unix since Unix V7, and know it reasonably intimately.
I'd like to say I'm new to Linux but, so far, I've found it impossible to install any version, on a spare Sun Blade 100 I happened to have.
I say impossible, since all Ubuntu distributions after 6.06 have empty silo.conf files, (both in the ISO and netboot binaries) which give the 'fast data MMU miss' from OBP. Other distros install and either don't work (SPLACK, Fedora) , or can't start X windows (Debian).
An attempt to upgrade 6.06 -> 8.04 -> 10.04 was apparently succesful, but left the machine unbootable.
My question is this. Has anyone succeeded in installing any version of Linux on a SPARC platform and, if so, how did you do it?
You can reply directly to my email address, as this has become a bit of a holy grail for me.
Thanks.

The best luck I've had with "special" hardware needs (not including any SPARCs, but PowerPC and one rather picky PIII server... long story there) has been Gentoo. Best of luck to you.
