    Regards,
Only the primary PCLinuxOS repositories, available for a subscription cost, are being updated at the present time. I inquired about this at the PCLinuxOS site, and I was quickly told that the iBiblio site is undergoing a rework. Did not really get any clarification if that site, in turn, feeds the other mirror site, but within minutes, Texstar posted an entry about subscribing to their site for a $25 fee. It could be that they are taking this time to solicit contributions and are withholding updates for a while until they get the revenue they are seeking. That is the way it seemed to me anyway.

That's fair, but it does seem to be a change in the way things work, if that is, in fact, what is going on.

Wow, if that's true then it sounds like they are basically holding their users hostage until a ransom is paid. That's not a very productive way of getting new customers if you ask me.

Another way of looking at it is that they're inviting their users to switch to Fedora or Ubuntu. Both primarily sponsored by for-profit companies yet with always free updates.

I am not sure that they are holding anyone hostage. After all, for one thing, I am not positive that the real issue isn't simply that the main mirror is going through adjustments. Secondly, the system still works, it is just dormant for a while with updates. Third, we have choices, including to hang on and wait, support the effort (the asking donation is not unreasonable at all; I've donated this much and more to several projects over the years).

I don't think that people should get all worked up over this. PCLinuxOS has had a donation model all along, but it is not a mandatory donation, and it STILL isn't. The donation suggestion is for those who want access to the direct package feed in order to get updates the minute they become available, rather than at the whim of the mirror sites, which seem to be out of date right now.

Angry OK... So much for the distro hopper stoper

Downloading Fedora 14 as I post... I was attracted to the rolling release feature but this is not good...

Yeah -- look at Mandirva, too!

BTW, the Fedora-14-lxde spin is quite quick and fun.
I had trouble with the rpmfusion repos, however.

    Salud!

What sort of problems with RPMFusion? I always use the protectbase plugin for yum to keep from getting into version kinks, but I've found RPMFusion rock solid compared to the old repo plethora that seemed always to lead to conflicts that would make your head hurt to get out of.

    Hello, greyhairweenie!

Specifically, I was using Fedora-14-lxde and could not get an old pre-recorded DVD containing mp3 tracks I recorded with nero to play on three different music players. I tried directly from DVD and after import into the app's library. I did not try guayadeque -- would it have made any difference?

It may have been a problem at that time only, but I got the impression Fedora does not want one to be able to use proprietary decoders. Nonetheless, I sorely miss the many SRV and Santana and Live at Fillmore East and other albums I recorded in 2004!

    Thank you for the inquiry.

I'm not clear on how that's a problem with the RPMFusion repositories. With those enabled, you could install gstreamer-plugins-ugly which would provide the codecs for your mp3s. Or VLC which will handle pretty much any medium you throw at it.

Did you have a problem with enabling the RPMFusion repos to be able to get stuff?

It's not that Fedora doesn't want you to be able to use proprietary code/codecs, it's that they are a free and open source project and keep that issue at arm's length. They discuss this in the project documentation and cheerfully point you to the repos where you can get such stuff.
