My first thread. :D
Hello, all,
Rumour has it this is the best Linux forum on the web, so...
First, "Thanks!" to programmers who VOLUNTEER to make Linux what it is today: a perfectly viable mainstream OS w/ user-friendly Package Managers and DEs like Gnome & KDE.
Now, about me. I grew up on CP/M, then MS-DOS/Win 3.11. University exposed me to UNIX/VAX. Currently, I can run circles around XP, but that doesn't get me very far in the computing business world, eh? In 2005, I built a P4-2.26GHz, whose Win98SE OS came from a Gateway System CD "rescue" then a HD swap. Shhh... I've since upgraded to XP, 2GB 333MHz RAM (max), & an SATA WD5001AALS.
What brings me here? A brain that's about to explode from information overload. Linux's many choices are like walking into an ice cream shop. "Which flavour?" Ummm... I've always wanted to learn/use Linux, but was hesitant. Then I found 3 "old" computers, which I combined to make a FrankenServer, whose stats are in my profile's bio. Currently it runs Debian, but that may change.
Ultimately, I'd like change careers to computers/networking/servers. What do modern servers run? Linux. Now I'm even thinking of FINALLY dual-booting my P4! Someday I hope to buy perfectly decent (off-lease?) PCs/servers by the pallet "CHEAP" on eBay, load'em up with Linux, then donate them to the poor. Time will tell. However, it wouldn't be financially feasible without Linux: the gift that may keep on giving...

Howdy and Welcome. Sounds Like you'll have some fun. Debian is a good distro to learn as a first distro. Choices there to (icecream flavors) ,stable (squeeze), Testing (wheezy), Unstable (sid).

Welcome. The 31 flavor, actually over 600, store is distrowatch.com. If you pick from the top 100 list or just the top 20 on that list, you can't go wrong. They have a search function which helps you narrow down your choices tool. The only thing to watch out for is that some distro's recognize legacy hardeware better than others, and how much ram you have can limit which distro's run smoothly for you. If you want to check out the recommended ram, search on <Linux> - Google Search, it will generally turn up the answer. In linux, most distro's are able to be burned as a live distro, one you can run from the disk without installing, so that you can try it out before installing.

Yay, replies!
Thanks. And doable. Not to promote eBay, but in the left column, Chose more... under Buying formats pops up a window. Select "Listed as lots" under Show only, and the (often off-lease) results will blow your mind. Desktops, laptops, blade servers, etc.* They may not be cutting edge, but for a non-profit, wow...the potential. HDs for an "inexpensive" RAID/NAS? Done. That's how I plan to build a blade server array, on which I'll most likely run CentOS.
