By reading, learning and working about and with unix.
But I guess, you knew that already
You must always face the curtain with a bow.

Hi & Welcome!
When I first joined here, I knew nothing except that my new laptop had a Fedora 10 installed on it by a friend (real guru). Dual boot with XP.
And so I played with it. Many times spending sleepless nights as I wait for answers from gurus who are in a different time zone.
Messed it up. Deleted the whole partition. Sometimes deleted the whole HD, DARN! But it was there that I really started to understand the system. At least for desktop basics.
And so...I encourage you to play around and not hesitate to post any questions on issues you encounter. You can anticipate good answers here.
ONE WORD of advise... NO! Let me rephrase that. FIVE WORDS of advise..
PLEASE backup important data regularly.
This can make your learning experience a lot better. If you have to learn data recovery, you can always make a mock problem to experiment with while keeping your data safely stored somewhere...
Good luck, enjoy the ride!

Welcome to the forum. A couple of sites you might find useful in addition to the forum are: DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD., and <Linux> - Google Search. Play around with different distro's, desktop environments, and different window managers. Try starting with your favorite distro, Ubuntu say, and setting up a dual boot the ubuntu (gnome) desktop, and Kubuntu (KDE) desktop. After exploring them both, take the one you like lesat, and change its desktop to Xfce, LXDE, JWM, etc. If you use the google linux, for desktop environements, you will find an extensive list. Play around and have fun.

Buy some used hard drives, install different distros on each.
Be fearless. Don't get frustrated. Follow what everyone else
before me has said . . . and Be Pane-Free!
