    What OS to run on my server

    Hey all.
    Been thinking what OS is best for my web server.

    I got a license for Win 2008 R2 i can use for free if i like or any of the linux distros.

    Any tips what i should go for?
    Im using it for webhosting, VPN and thinking of starting setting up VPS also.

    Hardware is
    Intel® Core™ i7-920 Quadcore
    incl. Hyper-Threading Technology
    RAM8 GB DDR3 RAMHard discs2 x 750 GB SATA-II HDD
    (Software-RAID 1)NIC1 GBit OnBoard
    connected at 100 MBit
    TrafficUnlimited

    Some prefer Windows while others prefer Linux.

    Trying both operating systems then deciding for yourself is usually the best course of action. As long as your computer hardware is fully compatible with the OS that you choose, it all boils down to personal preference, at least in my own opinion.

    Yea thats probobly correct.
    Just cant decide,
    heard some good things about 2008R2 and but never used it, only 2003 and that was a long time ago

    The industry standard is RedHat (free equivalent is CentOS), but I kind of like the tools available in SuSE (/ OpenSuSE). Remember you don't need to install a graphical desktop to operate a server, so any flavor of Linux can have a major performance and resource advantage over Windows. If you really need the graphical interface, you may want to stick with Windows for the familiarity.
