Software Suggestion
Hello, i was wondering if any developers would be happy to develop a simple piece of software for me. I can't code or do any of that stuff, but i feel that this software would be extremely helpful and very popular. It's a Personal Desktop Single User Wiki, or just a Wiki. I have looked high and low for such software, but can not find one that matches what i require. It also seams that many people are looking for a Personal Offline Wiki but can not find one that suits them.
Features:
- Plug-ins for Open Source development
- Saving and opening of database files
- Graphical Interface
- Simple and noob friendly for productivity and customization
- Styled like MediaWiki but completly offline and single user orientated.
And after that is done, we just the other people extend it with plug-ins. My suggestion would be to use a popular server-based desktop wiki, TiddlyWiki, MediaWiki and such to build upon, assuming there all open sourced.
Note: It seams that many people are not looking for a server based wiki, that could perhaps be a plug-in. Also, a pure desktop app, not in browser.
Sorry if this is much, im a writer and Wiki's are PERFECT for evolution of data. Also, it seams that there is no good one out there that isn't geared towards websites and multi-users. TiddlyWiki is the closest but its in browser. I would love a desktop wiki that uses a tabbed interface, as well as a simple tagpage or page sidebar that has search, categories and sub categories. The pages themselves should be organized via category in the form of drop down title bars that divides the pages up... is this to much to ask?Last edited by oz; 03-31-2011 at 02:29 PM. Sounds a bit like 'TaskCoach'.
A personal wiki is really just a text editor, especially if you're trying to use it to gather ideas rather than let other people get involved in working on those ideas.Linux user #126863 - see http://linuxcounter.net/

Thanks, i will install and spread the word. I would hope to see Personal Wiki software more common in the future, OpenOffice could bundle one i suppose.

TiddlyWiki uses a browser which eliminates the need for desktop compatibility/coding. Making an app for Linux (Gnome/KDE/Fluxbox, etc.) and Windows and Mac is a pain.
It has options for database backends (a contradiction of a "personal" wiki) and plugins. I don't know how your "idea" improves upon it.

Personally, I could see the use of such a tool, especially if you could convert it to a more traditional Wiki at a later time when you need to start collaborating with others. I will be meeting this weekend with a lot of people involved in these things in Chicago at the Flourish! open source conference, including the leaders of LibreOffice. I'll bounce the idea off of them and see what kind of response we get.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
Just remember, Semper Gumbi - always be flexible!
