    EULA license questions.. Help!

    Hi All,

I do not understand Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) licensing. Since Red Hat allows you to download a fully functioning version of the software for free, it would appear to be a free product, no license required, and you only have to pay if you want support.

However, I can’t reconcile that understanding with the language in this EULA:
on the redhat site at licenses/rhel_us_2-1.html
(sorry i can't post url as i am new Red Hat License Agreements This makes it sound like you must buy a license to run the OS—not just to be entitled to support. Am I looking at the wrong document?

Can you explain when it is necessary to buy a license—and when it is not?

    Thanks in advance,

Hi and welcome to the forum. RHEL is free to download and use, but if you want updates and support, then you have to pay for those. If you email the guys at RedHat, they can explain it better to you.

From experience you can use RHEL without a licence but you cannot access their support or repositories so you can never update your system.

If I understand it right, Fedora is basically the free, updateable version of Red Hat. Go to distrowatch.com and search for distro's based on Red Hat, and it will give you a list.

Scientific Linux 6 is a RHEL clone. Fedora is a kind of community driven test bed as I understand it.
