It might be worth trying Scientific Linux 6 which like CentOS is RHEL clone but of version 6. I did have to manually set up my wireless network on my Toshiba Satellite A120 pro using network manager but otherwise it has been pretty much smooth sailing.
Another option is a wireless USB key which should be a lot cheaper than a new computer although assuming you mean this one, I can't see anything that shouldn't work even if you have to install some proprietary drivers.
Things move very quickly in the open source world and something that doesn't work now may work perfectly in the next release cycle.If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)
My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

Good News

Thank you all (and thanks to the Ubuntu-DE Support Chat), I got the Ubuntu 10.10 working.
It instantly recognized my wireless card and sof ar seems to have no graphic issues either. My computer beeps and blings, so I guess Sound is there as well
and over all, I am now a happy Linux User (I liked the look of CentOS and Fedora though ... I am not a big fan of purple :P Now I have to find out how to customize that
)
