Gnome Shell / Gnome 3
Are any of the rest of you using Gnome Shell that now comes with Gnome 3?
I didn't think that I'd like it at all before installing it, but after playing with it some, it's starting to grow on me!
Anyone else?oz

Well, I don't use gnome at all but I have read some reviews of gnome 3 out of curiosity, and I must say it scared the living daylights out of me. No panel? A desktop that changes its appearance and content depending on what "view" you select? No windows on the main desktop, only thumbnails? (apparently you have to go to one of the subordinate desktops to see the actual window). It must be like learning a completely new OS.
It may be cool, but I wonder how many people will really feel happy about "pulling up their roots" in this way. I don't think I would want to do so at my age if I were a gnome user. I would probably feel resentful that people expected me to."I'm just a little old lady; don't try to dazzle me with jargon!"

It definitely takes some getting used to. I didn't like KDE at all once they went with KDE4 and still don't like it, but thought I might end up changing to it once Gnome Shell took over Gnome, but now I'm not so sure.

I'm certainly curious. Apparently, it's only just made Experimental on Debian so it could be a while. I did try an early version a few months ago; I think that was on openSUSE and it was strange but definitely had potential.
Maybe it will turn out to be what finally pushes me to XFCE on a permenant basis; it's unlikely to push me to KDE

I like Xfce and Openbox quite a bit but always start feeling like something is missing after using them for a while. Still, I might be persuaded to use one of them full time if Gnome Shell doesn't turn me into a convert. Note that you can also use a "fallback" option to use Gnome 3 in a mode more like previous versions, but I'm not a fan of turning something new into an older version, so I probably won't end up going with that.

I been curious about it. But right now, I'm not really liking what I see about it's looks.
I'll probably end up trying it sometime soon, though, just to quell my curiosity.
But keep us up to date on how you're liking it, oz!Jay

That's what made me think I'd not like it, but after sticking with it a few days, it continues to grow on me oddly enough. I installed it on a test machine but am now thinking about making it my default DE on my regular machine. Still, I might test it a few more days before deciding one way or the other.

Okay, I've had to ditch the Cantarell font that is the default font for Gnome 3. It looked nice at first, but now I've tired of it. Otherwise, Gnome 3 is still a refreshing change, overall.
Here's more on Gnome Shell for anyone that wants to read about it:

Sounds like it's sticking for you. How do you think it would work on dual monitor setups?
