Do they not mount automatically when you plug them in?
Depending on your window manager, you might not see an icon appear.
But you can also check your file manager.

I can be found either 40 miles west of Chicago, or in a galaxy far, far away.

Depending upon the distribution+version of Linux you are using, USB devices should mount automatically, although non-current versions will not support as many devices. As for your mp3 player, whether or not it is auto-mounted depends upon what specification it is supporting. In some cases, they will mount automatically, in others you will need to manually mount them after the device id is registered in /dev, and in others you may be SOL. So, the first question is, what distribution+version+kernel are you running?
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
