    Talking New to Suse

Hello everyone. I was having trouble with Windows XP (seems it wanted to tell me what to do!) So I used Suse 10.1 DVD and loaded it onto my computer, wiping off windows after I had put all my drivers and data files onto a spare hard drive, working from the USB port. Man what a pleasure, it loaded everything, I didnt have to look for drivers for anything, even my plasma monitor worked out ok.

After playing around some what, I decided to hook up my 3G modem to get onto the internet. The OS sees the modem and all the rom files on it, but of course it is meant for Windows and not Linux. No problem, I would search and download the correct driver for this modem, but before I went on a lengthy search, I checked to see if Linux could read my flash memory sticks and the external hard drive. Of course it didnt, so finding this forum page, I saw many others had the same kind of problem.

If I found that program "ntfs-3g" on my other windows computer, and downloaded it, how was I going to get it onto the Linux computer? I looked at Suse 11.x which seemed to have this kind of adaptability (can read hard drives formatted with Windows) but it is 2.5gig and I have only 2gig per month.

Sorry to say I am back on windows, spent a lot of time loading screen, sound, lan and printer drivers all over again.

Where can I get a DVD with suse 11.x ? Is there any courses on this OS?

Enjoyed reading all the hints and tips on this forum page, a lot of time I didnt have a clue what was being said, never the less, some of it made sense.

As far as I know, these guys are OK OSDisc.com - Buy SUSE CDs and DVDs - New Releases. Low Prices.. At least, they are linked from distrowatch.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

You can also get the DVD at the site below. Never used this site myself and don't really know anything about it. OSDisc is probably a good source as recommended above.

SUSE : The Linux Store, Your Leading Source For Linux Products

You can also buy the boxed set from Opensuse. This costs substantially more ($65.00USD) because it includes 90 day installation support by phone or email as well as a complete user manual. If you have limited bandwidth, it might be worth investigating as any programs you would want to install should be on the DVDs and you would not need to download them. My first experience with Linux was purchasing the boxed set for Suse 9.2 years ago and that's what I got, don't know if it has changed with Opensuse.

I didn't find any option to just buy Opensuse DVD at their site but I didn't investigate it thoroughly.

    Buy openSUSE - openSUSE
