Summarizing... this is just a celebration of 20 years of Linux-ing; there are several updates, but it isn't overhauling the system.

Well, it's Linus's kernel and he has the right to call it whatever he likes, but in his shoes, I'd have called it "2.8". "3.0" is confusing, suggesting something completely new and different (c.f. gnome 3).
I suppose it's nice that we'll be free of the enormous patch numbers currently used, but I still say "two-and-a-half cheers!"."I'm just a little old lady; don't try to dazzle me with jargon!"
