    Well, it's Linus's kernel and he has the right to call it whatever he likes, but in his shoes, I'd have called it "2.8". "3.0" is confusing, suggesting something completely new and different (c.f. gnome 3).

    I suppose it's nice that we'll be free of the enormous patch numbers currently used, but I still say "two-and-a-half cheers!".
