I am interested in computer science with focus on web-development and security. Please suggest a flavour of linux which will be best suited to my interests.

Most data centres will run Rad Hat or similar so Centos or Scientific would work but the best way to find out which distro suits you is to try them.

In answer to your other question, Microsoft has a multi-million pound marketing budget which they spend marketing an OS that is already pre-installed on most new PC's anyway! The smart phone market is changing the game in a big way!

CentOS is a popular option for web servers. I have always liked Ubuntu, though.

Adding to what elija and Roky said, you have to remember that you can get Linux for free. Most people (or sheeple) have the flawed preconception that if you give a product away for free, then it must not be any good.

Welcome to the forum. Linux is great, but it is different, so like anything different, most people wont take the time to try it and get comfortable with it.
