Yeah, Harp was pretty bad... but you shouldn't let your experiences of that low-quality lager beer keep you from enjoying it. They're not all that bad.

Personally I like proper beer. Marstons Pedigree, Green King's IPA, Old Speckled Hen, or... er... anything from Marstons or Shepherds Neame will fit the bill, thinking about it. I quite like the variety available too. I also drink cider when its hot, that's much more refreshing than lager. I had a bottle of that tasteless pap Becks last night. It was OK for a cold refreshing drink, but its a bit continental.

I also like scotch whisky. And I prefer cheap brandy to cognac. And I steer clear of alcopops...

I make my own beer and cider. I like porter, which is as
black as coca cola. Another favorite is india pale ale.
I experiment some times. Five gallons of apple juice,
five pounds of sugar and a little yeast will give you a
    reasonable cheap cider.

You could try and do some scrumpy - where you shred the apples and press them in the normal way, put the juice in a large bucket and leave it to ferment naturally. I've made that before, and it can make a pretty spectacular drink (it can also go badly wrong...) provided you don't get hung up on it being completely clear when you want to drink it..

Back when I was raising my boys at the ranch. I used to make Prickly Pear Wine from the cactus's in my cactus garden. Good stuff also.

Most years my wife and I go to the Appalachian String Band Music Festival at Clifftop, WVa, the last week in July. Basically a week of pickin', grinnin', and drinking 'shine with a host of the best country and old time musicians from around the world. I do have to say that as much as I like a really smoky/peaty scotch, good 'shine does go down smooth!
