Lightbulb Seeking for inputs on PhD

I don't know whether I have started a similar thread few years back.Anyway,I'm here again looking for PhD via distance learning. The reason is,I spent lot of time on a subject and then leave it and move to another one.

Now I want to focus on single subject for 3-5 years. My area of interest is File system.Still need to decide on exactly what's the topic would be.

I'm looking for inputs on PhD course offered by foreign universities and also thoughts on interesting topics or emerging trends on File system. Or any other details related to the course

    A couple of suggestions:

    1. Distributed file systems - proximity balanced in that data migrates toward the consumer of the data.
    2. Self-healing file systems - disc/file system errors are fixed automatically, and data is automatically moved from corrupted to non-corrupted devices.

Either of these should be good subjects for a PhD dissertation, I would think.

Thanks for the suggestion Rubberman. - Distributed/Parallel File system are interesting topics - but I suspect it also depends on transport layer (rdma, tcp etc) used between the systems. What's your thoughts on File system in RAM something like PRAMFS or RAMCLOUD or something like tagFS or maybe file system's used on Mobile phones.

Well, giving how much of our "computing" is on mobile devices these days, perhaps work on file systems for mobile phones that are securely sync'd with external (cloud or user) systems, and that if an update prangs the phone, it can be automatically restored to its previous state?
