Hi cousinlucky. Have you tried Audacity? It will export to whatever format you want plus it makes a "project" file that is good for back up.
Code:apt-get install audacity

Hi Lucky!
Just a thought here.
On whatever program you used to record with, did you take a look at the Preferences for it?
Sometimes the volume control for your microphone could be set quite low by default, making it hard to pick up on anything.Jay

Audacity looks like an alien spaceship control panel ( way over my head )!! i used the gnome sound recorder in ubuntu which I have now learned has settings other than the default. I had it set on microphone and capture which were the wrong settings I guess.

Looks can be deceiving. We use it because it is a very simple to use sound editor. You should give it a try.

After tinkering around with the sound recorder I discovered that the dust build-up in the microphone
connection was my problem.Linux registered user # 414321

Don't ya just love it when it's the little things in life that give you the headaches?
Really, though... I'm glad it was something that was easy to fix, Lucky.

It's not the first time that dust in my computer has made a fool out me JD. A few years ago I was all upset that
my computer stated that an on-disk disk was blank. I found our later, after using a laser lens cleaner, that it was
my brain that was blank and not the disk. Live and learn!!Linux registered user # 414321

OK Dan I took your advice and all of those icons on Audacity have little hints over them and i used Audacity to make a recording. I could not put it on a CD however.
I need to find out about audio formats and what uses what! More reading headaches!!Linux registered user # 414321
