Another reason for not using Windows!

Here is a description of the latest botnet creator, TDL-4. It's a boot-sector virus which is said to be practically undetectable. It even has its own built-in antivirus to kill off the competition. You really have to take your hat off to them!

It's funny how these things go full-circle. Ten or more years ago we were all concerned about boot sector viruses, then they became untenable as they were so easy to find and kill, and were really limited to floppy disks anyway. I immunised myself against those little buggers by installing LILO on the boot sector...

Of course, times move on - now I use grub

I use my Linux system to scan/clean client drives of Windows viruses. I have sent a message to one of my Linux A/V vendors, f-prot, about this virus several days ago. Still no response... Since my clients include a number of law firms, this could get messy!

I saw an article about this last week on theregister.org. It's part of the TDSS Virus that came out a few years ago and is still hard to detect. I may have even posted it here, but I can't remember and am too lazy to check my previous threads/posts because I am still traveling right now. I commend you Hazel for staying informed and researching this stuff. I wish more of my friends (whose computers I am always cleaning for them) would stay more informed. I haven't had an anti-virus and/or firewall on my Windows computers for 4 years now (since I got into Linux, basically). But one of them I use only for gaming and only have an internet connection for online authentication of serial keys, and the my other ones (Yes, I have 7 computers; more if you count virtual machines) are usually being reformatted every 6-12 months (and each install is ghosted on my file server). So I am only downloading stuff onto my Linux computer. Plus, I stay up on this crap all the time and know how to avoid/handle viruses.
