Ubuntu over windows
Why would you suggest ubuntu over windows 7, despite the fact that it's free...?
- 07-09-2011 #2
I've used Win7... I have to say that it is an attractive, smooth looking OS.
If it's running on the right hardware, it's snappy and responsive.
If the keyboard jockey isn't clicking everything on every damn thing that pops up, it's fairly secure.
Ubuntu is attractive, smooth, snappy and responsive.
Not running as an admin by default, so you could click on stuff...
I don't have a problem with the Windows OS. I just hate the fact that it's easier for an educated Windows user to bork the system than it is for a totally moronic Linux user to do so.Jay

But it's easier to use Windows than Ubuntu.... I just hate the method of installing applications in Ubuntu..... Dependency specifications (than just including the depending files) make it complex, difficult to install apps offline....

It's free, it's secure, it's free, you have more control over your system, programs are free, you can modify the OS or any program as you see fit (if you have the knowledge), it crashes less, and it is FREE. I guess you get the idea, that to me not paying $200 for windows, another big amount for word, and then having to buy third party aps/games/ etc, is a big reason for linux on all my computers. My wife can gum up/break an OS pretty fast, but with linux I seldom have to "fix" her computer. We don't get viruses, though it is possible for someone to write a linux virus, almost all viruses are written for windows or the Mac OS. Linux programs mostly work out of the box or with a little tinkering, and there are usually multiple programs to choose from. A good example is word processing, I know of at least 3 word processing programs in linux, all of which meet my needs, and there are probably more out there I just have never had the need to find.

Have a look at Why Linux is better
- 07-09-2011 #6
It's only easier for you because you are used to Windows.
Remember one thing and you'll be fine... Linux is NOT Windows
It would be the same if you were a long time Mac user.
As far as dependency resolution, that can be solved quite easily if you use the package manager (for any distro, in fact!).
Do this for Ubuntu...
Dependencies will be handled by the system... no muss, no fuss.Code:sudo apt-get install <whatever>
Example... sudo apt-get install wine
Everything will be done for you.
Offline, you will run into issues... but the same could be said for Windows or MacOS.Jay

Windows all the way
don't get me wrong Ubuntu is superior to windows on a technical level ONLY.
Ill bet that anyone who is computer literate but network illiterate could network 2 windows7 computers at home.
Could they do that with 2 Linux computers NOT ON YOUR LIFE!
in conclusion I think that Linux is an OS for geeks only and anyone willing to venture into the world of Linux must be willing to increase their technical knowledge greatly.

Not necessarily. We have more than a few members here who are far from 'geeky', and are only looking for a stable OS that works well for their day to day usage needs. Ubuntu fits the bill quite nicely.
Ubuntu, and Mint as well, provide many users with an attractive system that allows them to do anything they could do on a Windows machine. Much of the time, this is done with more simplicity than on proprietary OS's.Jay
