Some light reading to get me started

    Hi,

I want to start programming/scripting in linux but since I'm such a newbie I figured I better do some reading that covers overall operation of linux and background knowledge before I dive into a particular programming language. I found an online book called 'LINUX: Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition (Version 1.0.0).' Do you guys think this would be a good place to start? It seems like it covers a lot, the only issue is that its a little old. 2.4.3 was the latest linux kernel at the time it was written. Is it still a good place to start? Any other suggestions?

That is a very popular book among Linux users even if it is becoming somewhat dated. You can search this forum for free linux books and get lots of links to some other good books. Another popular online book is The Linux Cookbook. When I get back to my other location where my notes are stored, I'll try to remember to post some additional links, some of which have programming specific titles that you might be interested in.

Note that some links might not work any longer, or they may no longer offer the free books.
