    Most of the GNU software I see listed isn't GNU software at all. And there are loads of cross-platform applications coming from an Open Source background.

    Also, Linux != Bash

    Things like Android devices mostly won't have a full Bash shell. Neither have they got the full GNU-utils. You may more expect something like tsh and busybox (neither of which are GNU btw) if any.

    Not to mention that there aren't any 'Linux-clones'. Linux is the clone in this story. The BSD's, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX are the full-blood unixii. But if you want to rid yourself of the unix heritage, you are more than welcome to try OS's like Haiku or so...

    But what is the problem? You want a totally new OS, written in a totally new language, with a totally radical interface, but it has to be fully compatible with everything? Well, good luck supporting every graphics card and proprietary piece of hardware out there...

    One non-Windows OS (POSIX compliant) that doesn't use X-Windows (but can use it) is QNX. It does support a lot of GNU tools (gcc, g++, etc) and other open source tools such as Eclipse. In fact, most GNU tools will easily compile and install on QNX. It is a micro-kernel real-time operating system that is most famous for being the new RIM notepad OS, as well as the Cisco IOS operating system.

    No offense, but this seems to be just a troll with no actual purpose behind all the rant. Period.

    How is trying to encourage the community to go in a new different direction trolling?

    Rubberman, I've seen QNX, it's interesting but it's not geared to the home desktop user.

    Re: QNX. True, it is not aimed at the desktop market since it is a real-time OS used more for embedded and industrial/defense systems where hard real-time (deterministic) behavior is necessary. However, I used it for a desktop system very happily (including X/Motif)for almost 20 years. I didn't find much Unix/Linux software I couldn't build to run on it without much difficulty. I even ran DOS/Windows in its virtual machine tools.
