How many applications running at once for you?

Just curious about computer user habits...

How many apps do you all usually keep open at any one time on your machines (note that I'm not referring to services or daemons)?

For me, it's usually about 3 or 4 at once, those apps consisting of a file manager, a terminal, a text editor, and a web browser.

What about the rest of you? Do you run them one app at a time, or do you frequently run many apps at once, perhaps even a dozen or more?

2 or 3, usually. Iceweasel & Icedove are usually open, sometimes a couple more. I seldom open more then 4 or 5 at a time. I generally use an app and then close it, no need to waste memory by having things open if I'm not using it.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

Wll, I always have Sylpheed running because downloading emails every few minutes keeps my internet connection open. I usually have a browser (mostly links at the moment but I might have FF open too for sites that don't work with links). I tend to have two or three terminals on different desktops; if it's Wednesday, I'll be updating Crux so one of those terminals will be a root console. Maybe my file manager but only if I'm actually using it; I often do file work with bash. And quite often LibreOffice or an editor. And my four trusty buttonbars and the mount tool, but they're more in the way of desktop furniture.

At any given time, I usually have FireFox, a terminal or two, Transmission (I seed distros, even if I don't use them) and sometimes a media player.
This is a typical layout, but there are times when I'll have several workspaces going at once.

Multi Tasking is not my strong point.

Usually a apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade , Some browser open, Leafpad to type in replies in case browser crashes (this site only seems froggy in Opera or Iron). Otherwise, My gear (kinda like Hazels) just can't stand the strain.

Edit: Forgot to mention. A lot of times a upgrade stuff via smxi
which you do out of a X environment. When upgrade is done. I can use MC and nano and links 2 while out of X to trouble shoot and fix any broken upgrades, or induced Carbon interface errors (me), Debian testing or unstable may have for that week.

I generally have Firefox with 7 tabs open, run clam AV in the background, then either a game, Openoffice + Swift Bible, or gimp + picture files. Then when system update pops up, I update also. When a new distro I want to try comes out, I will download it and burn it while playing a game plus the firefox and 7 tabs open.

Two at the moment... Google-chrome and Steam under wine. It's not unusual for me to have ten different things going at once.
