Of course if you were looking to start out on Linux, I suppose you'd google it! And hey presto, it's Ubuntu, Debian, RedHat and openSUSE that appear.

Aswell as distrowatch, but if you really were a newbie then would you know what a distro is?

    Hi

As mentioned in a post before, there can't be enough distributions out there. Everyone, if he is a newbie or an expert can find his linux depending on his needs. But the problem is that the most of us will not be able to get an overview about all distributions because linux is Open Source and there will be many distros out there that exist in a dedicated groups or companys without get mentioned in the public.

I say the more the better. Competition drives innovation which eventually begets better products. The winnowing process will separate the chaff from the grain. This can only happen when there is choice. I think there are a lot of distros out there that were created for no other purpose than to be a feather in someone's cap. After all, it would look impressive when applying for a job at Red Hat to say you created a distro back in 2011 that went all the way to number fourteen on DistroWatch. Others like CRUX, target a very specific type of user and the developers don't really care if their distro is even noticed or used by the masses. Two that I used and miss are Morphix and Damn Small. May they rest in peace.

Too many for some, not too many for others... it probably all depends on your perspective.

Well said. I would like to see more Linux floppy install distro choices. Not everyone in the world has modern gear.

Some distro's are different from the parent only in the look of the desktop, the particular included programs, or the native language that they run on. Still if you like Ubuntu say, but prefer chrome to firefox, Abi word to openoffice, are a native Portugese speaker, etc. there is a distro pretty close to what you want. As someone mentioned though, finding that particular mix can be challenging, especially if you are new to linux. The distrowatch search engine can help you narrow it down to a manageable number though.
