I use KDM mainly because I use KDE but also because I have several other DE's installed....having a display manager makes it easier to switch between them....

I use gnome in Mint and IceWM for everything else ... so switching window managers is not an issue for me, but nano ~/.xinitrc comment one entry and uncomment another is not a major problem. The only thing I occassionally want to do is switch users in X, but I find most of the time I am just being lazy and can do what I want with a single X session and using virtual terminals anyway

Right... I never mix multiple distros, desktop environments, or window managers on the same system so the switching thing really isn't an issue for me, either. Back when I did mix them, my .xinitrc file had all he various entries in it already, so the quick edit like yours worked well enough, although it wasn't quite as quick as a checkbox in a display manager, if I remember correctly.

GDM only because it's the Mint default but use Slim with CRUX.

Haven't used a display manager in about 12 months. I only run Xfce 4.8 these days anyway - gave up on most other desktops and WMs a few months back.

    QFT.

Also, in some broken distros such as OpenSUSE 11.1 where the .xinitrc file always appears to be corrupted with every subsequent shutdown, the display manager is essentially the only tool which can be relied upon for swapping between various DEs at will.

Was a KDE fan until 4 came out. Didn't care for the direction they went, so I've been DM-less and DE-less ever since. I've sampled the other environments now and again but I guess I've gotten used to working more directly with the system.
