I would agree with most of these steps except the downloading part. This should be done from a non-infected system and burned to a CD. If you are doing this from the infected system the DLs could become infected.

This system should be removed from the network until it is cleaned and verified.

If changing her password does not work, basically her system is cooked. When I got hit like that - the only option I would consider is rebuild. This is why I am with Linux.

Windows will make you swallow the big pill, for me - at least once every six months.

I'm praying for her because I know just how it feels to be frustrated as well as spending a lot of money
trying to protect a windows OS on the Internet; and besides that speakeasy.net does not appear to
be anywhere near on the ball!! I think all I am going to be able to do for her is to give her a gift email
account at fastmail that she can use for her friends and family in the future!

Perhaps this is an opportunity to gently suggest having a look at Linux as an alternative...

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

    Been there Elija!

My female friend is as old as I am; the only way Linux is going to make it onto her computer is if I travel completely across the country with some Ubuntu installation disks in my pocket and even then she will likely resist it.

I can not count how many times I have mentioned to people that they are inviting disaster by using their outlook express email program on the Internet. What can anyone do?? After disaster strikes again and again; they realize that a person has to be a real computer guru to safely use windows on the Internet.

I believe my friends computer is being used to send out spam to everyone in her address book and probably a lot of others.
I am going to buy her a fastmail account and try to convince her not to put her name on it. It's an adventure!!

Well at least I finally talked my friend into downloading a Seamonkey browser.
She has used nothing but windows and takes advice from microsoft employees.

She is totally unaware of the things microsoft has done and is doing. She
actually wants microsoft to set up the fastmail account I am giving her.

I would change the password, but if there's a trojan horse installed they can keep getting the password also make sure there's no backdoors as the person can keep re-entering.

    change the password
    do a sweep
    change the password
