Is running Photoshop CS5+ under linux legal?

Just a quick question.. (I am not sure if I am asking this in the right place, if I am not can you please let me know if there is a better place to ask this question.. )

I was just about to install Photoshop CS 5.1 Following the tutorial - An Idiot’s Guide to Installing Photoshop CS5 on Ubuntu 10.04

When it occurred to me to ask: Is it legal to obtain msvcr80.dll and atmlib.dll which it says you will need, or are they owned by Microsoft?

    Thank you for your time,

    Pete

    Hello there!

Usually, I would suggest talking to a lawyer about anything that makes you ask that question. Just a matter of CYA.
That being said, MS offers .dll files for download from their own site. Usually for the purpose of troubleshooting/repairing and installation of said program.

Hmm.. where abouts are they on offer on the MS Site?

I mean isn't using a part of Windows i.e. some .dll files to run some software under linux sort of stealing from MS?

Are you trying to say that MS gives away its .DLL files for free without any restriction on there use.. if so that would be cool..

Running legally obtained, licensed software on Linux isn't breaking any rules.
That's about all I can say with certainty.

    I think this forum

    FreeAdvice Legal Forum

would better serve your question instead of us. I am just a biker and run Linux. I have a hard enough time with traffic tickets on scooters.

AFAIK, winehq.org has licensed most (or all) of the Windows dlls to use in order to support Windows applications under Linux (and other operating systems). So, running any version of Photoshop (Adobe) under Wine should be just fine as long as you have a valid Photoshop license. FWIW, a lot of the more recent versions of PS don't run well under Wine...

    I found this
As of 2011, Wine runs many software packages with good stability and many others with minor issues.[28] The developers of the Direct3D portions of Wine have continued to implement new features such as pixel shaders to increase game support.[29] Wine can also use native DLLs directly, thus increasing functionality, but then a license for Windows is needed unless the DLLs were distributed with the application itself.
    Here.

Open source alternative to photoshop, etc: GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program

Or if you're a super duper, professional, photoshop, wizard fellow, who is above that, then I would suggest that you need to ask yourself why you're running an open source OS that does not natively support the programs which are most important to you?

people are free to choose what kind of apps they want to run on their OS, supported or otherwise.

And GIMP is a steaming pile of crap that no serious career photographer will ever touch with a 100 kilometer-long pole.
