Suggestions for distribution to use.
I am still a newbie as far as I am concerned when it comes to Linux. I have a little bit of experience with the Fedora for personal computer use. I am in the process of wanting to set up a web-server and a mail-server. This will be for academic environment. Currently leaning towards openSuSE simply because the Novell connections that will be useful in the academic future. Looking for the communities consensus.
Thank you in advance

Redhat if the university's footin' the bill, Debian if not.

OpenSUSE is a good choice but my favorite distro for Sever is CentOS and second priority is Debian. CentOS is a clone of RHEL minus RedHat branding. I would suggest you check this Poll.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

If you are already familiar with Fedora, then you'd feel at home using Red Hat or one of its free rebuilds like Scientific Linux and CentOS. Debian Stable is also a good alternative because it undergoes lengthy testing before release. openSUSE will also do the job just fine, but I don't see any advantages over other distros simply because its linked to NOVELL.
