What would be a good name for an OS?
We are currently using a name I'm not very happy with at the moment. We are using Portals OS. But we need something more catchy and more "flow like". We tried indieOS, but it never caught on that well. Anybody have any good ideas to help us out a little? Thank you! To look at our webpage, just search for "portals os" on Google.

Being a Biker. I think ZoomOS would be a good name for a distro. I don't know if Apple would get their panties in a wad over it since that word Zoom is attributed to their software. It gives a impression of speed though, (which us bikers like).
Edit: I guess the name is for open source application. Not related to apple at all.Last edited by rokytnji; 09-17-2011 at 06:29 AM. Reason: friday night partying

I didn't spot any screenshots or a download links ... might be easier to suggest something if we could see what the distro looks like ...

I've taken a look at the site and what I think you're doing now is absolutely wrong (no offence intended).
You're trying to get away from the legacy that classic Linux systems have and in the mean time you ask legacy Linux for help about some topics.
What you need to do is get away from us and start asking for help about usability to your grand mother or somebody else, who is intended to be the average user.
This is the critical point where most Linux distributions have screwed up in terms of usability. Go out there and find your average user. Go to the local community centre and interview some people. Go to the local supermarket and ask people there.
Go to some other common place and ask people there, but do not come to places flooded with *Linux nerds* for help if what you're trying to achieve is to get away from the *Linux nerds*.
As such I'm going to give you some advice of my own which is to leave the cliché "OS" out of the name. Go for something simple, I as that is what most people I've spoken with have come up with.
Here is a list of things I've come up with:
- Katie
- Alien
- Stealth

It does seem a bit negative over on the portals-os website. It seems to be about how crap everyone else is rather than how good it is. Some of the concepts are looking OK, but you've got to be careful about some of your claims. You have some good ideas but your claim that its 'possibly the best Linux Distribution ever to be created' may fall short by a long way - you're faced with the resources that Canonical, RedHat, Novell and Debian can pull into the Linux scene, so you'll be hard pressed to make something more complete.
As far as a name goes - either go the way of Ubuntu and pick a name that has meaning for people who have recently struggled, or go for a fully corporate look, and use the name that's already emblazoned on your site - 'Versa Omega'. (Or you could call it RoxOS
)

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.
