Large support community. Lot's of info on google when learning Ubuntu. When it works for you it works good.
Why use Ubuntu? | Ubuntu
All that being said. There are other distros that are just as good depending on user preferences and what you expect to use your computer for. Ubuntu is not the only Linux distro thatIMHO.is the boss of all

Ubuntu is, indeed, a well put together system. Easy to setup, easy to use.
And you have the option of opening a terminal and editing files manually if you choose.
Most hardware works out of the box, no extra configuration needed.
So, added to what Roky said, it's great.
I just disagree with one point...

Disclaimer: I've been using Ubuntu since 2005 and it's been my favoured Linux distro since about 2008, so I'm biased!

Ubuntu is not the "boss", but it's probably the most popular of the distros. If you're new to Linux and you've discovered Ubuntu then that's fine. Use it to get used to Linux, and if you feel the need try other distros, feel free! If you do distro-hop, you will eventually find the one that suits you best and it may or may not be Ubuntu. Good luck with your Linux adventure, whatever distro and desktop you use.

Ubuntu is one of the most downloaded distro's. It is user friendly to those just coming from windows, and as was mentioned above, pretty much works out of the box without a lot of tweaking. Having said that, to me linux in general and Ubuntu in particular have the advantage of being free and fully functional. About the only disadvantage is that certain programs that are written to run under windows may not work right under linux. I'm talking primarily about games, but there are probably some other programs as well.

Not everyone likes Ubuntu. Some people hate it! There are three things about it that I, for one, don't like:
1) It's big - some say bloated - and doesn't run on the kind of hardware I use.
2) It gets upgraded every six months, which tends to break things.
3) It does too much for you and doesn't encourage you to learn to understand the underlying system.
Having said that, 1) is not a problem for ex-Windows users because they have big computers; they have to in order to run Windows! And they don't necessarily care about 3).

There was a time when 'buntu was a buggy rendition of debian unstable with a brown theme and some bongos playing on start up... times have changed and nowadays 'buntu has a purple theme...

Until you decide for yourself, you might keep an extra partition for trying different distros - That way you can keep all of your personal setup and still try Mandriva, or Puppy or PCLinux or ??? any of many many others when you feel the urge - usually 10G is plenty.
Have fun and don't get too hooked on one distro, which is, i think, what all the follicle speak above was about.- Clouds don't crash - Bertrand Meyer
