Only kidding. My missus runs Linux and Windwos - I don't think she cares as long as she can get on Facetube.

I've managed to convert our sons machine to Linux and he knows Windows is not the OS for him, from experience but I don't think he cares either as long as it just works.

On the net though. I have convinced some old die hard Windows users to at least run Puppy Linux on their older computers that won't run the newer Windows. Can't say how many though.

Two friends whose computer are quite old and they cannot afford to buy windows. I installed linux mint on one and antiX on the other.

My Sis in law got a netbook and even if she can easily afford a windows cd she requested me to install ubuntu 11.04 on it since she knows she only uses it for emails, social networking and basic office stuffs (libre office)

A friend who bought a netbook with a pirated XP installed. I also placed an xfce too.

My wife whose windows 7 netbook is now double boot with Ubuntu xfce 11.04. The windows starter crashed and the shop wanted us to pay US$ 30.00 just to reinstall since the OS "is not part of the warranty". And note that I bought that netbook with windows 7 SE preinstalled with a product key. I just reinstalled the Windows 7 SE again just in case others might want to use the netbook bu my wife? She's been using xfce since then. She just needs it for FB and some email and docs.

My fourth and fifth son, I proselytized as early as 3 years ago. Hahaha. So I guess that gives me a total score of six. Not so good right?

    Zero...

I installed debian on my mother's laptop, but she is a pensioner who had not used a computer at all until a few years ago and it took her long enough to do the absolute basics on windows vista, so moving to something else was a step too far. The iproduct and loony tunes program complicated matters further - got it working with gtkpod and amarok (I think?), but knew straight away that managing her media with another program would just be too much and create more work for me, plus multimedia stuff is not my strong point either - so I gave up and just took the easy way out and removed Debian. Now I just get called in to do the inevitable monthly iproduct and loony tunes re-installation.

My wife will not use anything but windows due to her reliance on skype and windows live products - so that's that. The alternatives are apparently not good enough.

Anyone else I've ever tried to convert over the years has either simply given up and run back to their windows, because they could not get something working first time, could not get a certain program to run or just can't take the demotion of having been a super "sysadmin" in the windows world and a complete noob in the *nix world. One of my colleagues prefers to run a windows 2000 server to a linux based server - due to his mickeyshaft qualifications, that's up to him of course...

Nowadays I don't bother with "conversions" and advise others not to bother also. Unless it's a certain kind of person who is prepared to make 110% of the effort, it's just not worth the trouble. The ideal "convert" is the person who will find it for themselves with no help or encouragement from you - those are also the best type of convert.

    Not a one.
My wife knows the benefits of Linux, but is comfortable (and more than competent) with Windows.
Everyone else I even mention Linux to think that I'm trying to describe a 'free but better' Windows system. So I just leave them alone.

As users per se, not many. I have linux and one windows machine at home and my kids use them just the same.

But at work I mentioned linux to the boss some years ago, since then they changed some HP9000 running HP/UX to HP blades running RedHat for our ERP, some intranet apps, limesurvey, moodle, R, jabber, etc. Also changed the VOIP form some propietary router protocol to Asterisk , and we have some 150 thinclients running linux+firefox plus some 20 linux PC for general use, still some 400 windows PC to go but we are getting there

Just one... but then even he only runs Linux as a server, and he still runs Windows 7 for any desktop use.

When it comes to converting Windows users to Linux, I frequently think about the old saying, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink", as it applies quite well to Windows users.

Do be honest, I don't know.

A few people have become interested enough to at least have a look when they have seen that Linux doesn't look that scary and a few of those have installed it. I've lost touch with some of those so I don't know if they are still using it.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.
