Personally, I'd advise against Damn Small. It's a dormant project, and there hasn't been a release in over 3 years....

That's kind of sad - DSL was a ground-breaker in its day.

Agreed. But the head developer, Robert Shingledecker, happens to be the head honcho on TinyCore.

The other approach we could take to this, is what not to run...! :P

You definitly shouldn't run Ubuntu 11.10, Debain full install, Linux Mint, OpenSuse and probably any of those sought of full blown OS's (ones that take up 8GB of space just for the basic install)

That leaves you with approximately 575 distros that might be workable on your ibm thinkpad assuming their is around 600 or so.

    I hope that helps :P

I like puppy, its a little bit more robust than DSL. Knoppix should also work, and its also pretty user friendly.

One word of caution concerning Knoppix... it's not really designed to be installed.
It's meant to be run as a live environment.

As much as I like and respect Knoppix, I'd never install want to deal with a full install.

Yes, very good point. Suppose that aspect of it slipped my mind as i myself only run knoppix from a flash drive.
