But only in America. In England, we Drive (a car, cart, buggy, flock of sheep, whatever - but you always drive 'something') on the road. The driveway is the short piece of land that you drive (your car, cart, etc.) from your house to the public road. It's not the fault of the English language that your driveway is only the length of your car, and it doesn't have a a garage or stable at the end of it...
