I'm using the Cinnamon desktop, it's an adaptation of Gnome 3, and it's available for Ubuntu. You could give it a try?

Welcome to LFO.
Linux Mint is a good refuge for those who don't like Unity. It's based on Gnome 3 but the MSGE gives a more traditional feel to the desktop. It also comes with a MATE (Gnome 2 fork) desktop that gives you the old style Mint interface and Cinnamon is a simple install away. On the other hand, if you are generally happy with Ubuntu, there are the alternatives such as Xubuntu, Kubuntu and so on.If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

Ubuntu 10.04 is long term support, but even that must eventually be replaced. Try the xfce or lsde desktops instead of gnome.
