Open SUSE upgrade and back up of existing files

I am in the process of upgrading my 11.4 to 12.2 - after I get around a few technical issues I am facing currently.

However, before taking that action would like to know if it will be necessary to back up the files before the upgrade is attempted.

    Thanks for your response.

Upgrades can go wrong - if the data is important you need to back it up.

It's far better to have a backup and not need it than it is to not have a backup and need it. I speak from bitter personal experience. Additionally, make sure your backup has worked as that feeling is even worse. Bitter, bitter personal experience _0_

I agree with that - better safe than sorry.
Will copy the files and pix to cd first.
