    Linux Server is Down

    Hi Friends,
    If server is down ,what are things your going to check ......could you please help me out???
    I am new to this.....

    I can be found either 40 miles west of Chicago, in Chicago, or in a galaxy far, far away.
    Do you have physical access to the machine in question? If so, can you login from the console? What do you see if you cannot?
    Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

    Well that depends on how far I can get.

    If I can get her to boot even into single user mode then I will head over to /var/log and checkout dmesg, messages, mcelog any any of the logs of servers that I run.

    If she won't even get that far, then I'll take a good look at the error output from the kernel. Usually I can figure out what is wrong just because of experience but sometimes I have to write down the error and hit a search engine!
    Also, depending on symptoms and circumstances I might even do a hard drive test or memory test. fscking usually doesn't hurt either.

    What kind of symptoms does your server have?
