From a technical pov, wine is a fantastic piece of work and a lot of effort has been done on it and also the community around it.
But imho, even back in the days before VMs were popular, wine was not worth the trouble.
At least for me. It took hours/days to get a <INSERT_WINDOWS_APP/GAME_HERE> running,
and with any update of either wine or the windows tool you had to start over.
And with todays access to virtualbox/vmware/xen in combination with powerful hardware, there is even less reason to use wine.
Yes, this needs a license, some gigabyte of disk space and some ram.
But on the plus side
- the windows tool was developed for a windows env
- you can get support by the devs/company of that windows tool
- the windows tool will run without tricksYou must always face the curtain with a bow.

Thanks for the reply, Irithori
Out of all the years that I've been running Linux, I've never actually used or even installed Wine for that matter, but was thinking things were probably pretty much as per your comments above for most users. Maybe a poll will provide some inkling of an idea about how popular Wine currently is, but then of course any polls posted on general forums are not all that conclusive. Still, I'm curious about it.oz

I use it occasionally. Mostly to play games like Command & Conquer or Quake III.

I use it for a couple of games, like Diablo 2 or Heroes of Might and Magic.

I've never installed it. I use Linux more or less exclusivly. I do have one dual boot machine but almost never use it. If I need Windows for anything that's what I use.

Never used it. The one time I tried, I gave up quickly as not being worth the effort to configure and set up.

Despite the fact that a few years ago I used Wine to play a few games from the "golden age" (late 1990s to early 2000s) I voted never as I haven't even considered it in the past three or four years. With games that old, it was usually flawless though.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.
