    GNU vs Linux

    Hi everybody,

    I'm just new to open source world and would like to start with differences between GNU and Linux operating systems. I googled and found out that Linux is just the kernel (tldp.org) but what does it mean and what's GNU then? It's confusing to me. Secondly, I went to GNU official page and found out about Linux-based versions of GNU. What are the differences between those versions with Linux distros?
