When a boy growing up in Union Gap, Washington, USA, Canada honkers migrated up and down the Pacific Flyway as they had since the beginning.
One night, awakened from deep sleep by a noise I could not ID immediately, I looked out at the foggy cold late autumn to see what it was. Then,
I realized it was the sound of Canada Geese flying over with constant calling back and forth so the flock would not lose their way. They flew
by that night for almost an hour before the noise abated with their passing.

Nowadays, wetlands sufficient to feed and shelter such large numbers no longer exist. The geese have no sustaining habitat along the West Coast
any longer. The no longer migrate great distances. They become at least seasonal residents of places like Oregon's Willamette Valley, where crop-
lands have become their winter feeding grounds.

Here, they live in an irrigation canals, oftentimes, like this one.

Every year the struggling tree outside of my apartment window clings to life and shows itself!
