Sounds cool. And a good use for dedicated Linux boxes. But what if the source wants to get paid for their submissions?

As far as I know, it is for real, Lucky. The New Yorker has adopted it for a new whistle-blower service. You use Tor to connect to it. It is called "Strongbox". Here is a slashdot article about it: The New Yorker Launches 'Strongbox' For Secure Anonymous Leaks - Slashdot

It's a technology, not a service. If you read the slashdot article I linked to for Lucky you will see that they allow for direct, secure communication between the reporter and source via the service, using Tor as a pipeline.

I did read the article, and thanks for reminding me about slashdot. I haven't visited them in ages. It put me onto a whole afternoon of reading.

I suppose my real question is something like this:

Even if the technology is bullet proof, at every step of the way, people need to be involved. People are fallible, and prone to bribery, foolishness, etc. That's the irony. A technology to make it easier to blow the whistle on crooks is just as susceptible to crooks as any other.

Why assume the people working at the New Yorker are any more honest than the people you're blowing the whistle on?

And why assume that the people running TOR are not goverment goons? It looks to me like a way to dupe people into thinking they have anonymity when they are actually being tracked even worse than before.

And why are people so concerned with anonymity? It just slows the internet to a crawl with all this extra BS everything has to go through.

Because the world is rapidly turning in to a very spooky place:

The WH is using the IRS as a poltical weapon against anybody with even the slightest hint of opposition.

Common Core wants to teach children the new math; which means how they should feel about train B getting to the station later than train A. So that they can grow up to write "warm and fuzzy" monitoring algos that feel like sunshine on my toes in the morning.

"Fair share" means I work like a dog and get taxed to death while a bunch of bums live easy off of my labors and they want to track every penny I make so they can bleed me dry.

Google and the NSA are having relations that would make Caligula blush and we're all getting hosed with the resultant tracking mess.

Everything is being tracked to the Nth degree and fed in to algos that can mathematically prove beyond any shadow of any doubt that a bumble bee cannot fly and can predict who will do bad stuff based on their wammy mart purchases and choice of porn! Which is how the jack-booted thugs decide who to wake up at 0300 with an M-4 to the schnoz.

Anonymity? F-n A, Yeah! I want a friggin Heisenberg phase discriminator that simultaneously places me in 37 distinct quantum space-time states just so I can have a little plausible deniability about whether or not I even had breakfast this morning. After all, it won't be long before the death panels will be able to order you to the Gulag for even looking at a bowl of Sugar Smacks!

Thanks, but I'm doin' great bro! And I'm only being quasi facetious!

I have seen the future and it ain't pretty at all; Idiocracy and Minority Report were run through a blender and what came out the other end was some seriously spooky stuff!

You should never expect complete anonymity on anything in this age.
