Future college student, should I get Red Hat certified?

And I noticed Red Hat offering a Red Hat System Administration I course-which looks like it covers BASIC self taught things, but anywho...you move up as you go.

What do you guys think? I heard they need Linux guys anyway right? And the salaries look pretty good to

My suggestion would be to download and try Scientific Linux. Especially if leaning towards a Science field. Get good at it and see if you like it. It is based on Redhat.
Also, go with what you enjoy.

What about Fedora? I don't care for the YUM package manager, but I COULD like it

Take a look at SL's website, explore at the How To links. Then, you decide.

Fedora is fine, especially for developers specializing in Redhat. I found it to be relatively unstable and disappointing for what I need in a distro, what with repo problems and such, at the time I tried it! I do not like RPMs, period, but the call is yours to make.

YUM is not hard. It's like any package manager -- just takes getting used to.
