    Error in Compiling a Kernel

I am trying to compile a kernel and I am getting the following error

    SYSCALL arch/i386/kernel/
gcc: error: elf_i386: No such file or directory
    make[2]: *** [arch/i386/kernel/] Error 1
    make[1]: *** [arch/i386/kernel] Error 2
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.19'
    make: *** [debian/stamp/build/kernel] Error 2

I am using gcc version 4.6.3, whereas the version recommended in the manual I am following is 3.4 but I cannot install it i tried
    # apt-get install gcc-3.4 make
but it cant find it in the database

    thanks in advance

An odd output you got there. Can you provide more info?
Where did you get the sources and which version(2.6.19 look odd nowdays)?

Yes I am trying to use version 2.6.35 . And I am trying to do it on Ubuntu 12.04.
I am working with this version because I need it for Installing RTAI 3.9 (Which I need for installing EtherLAB here is the link ).
And I am following this guide
it provides the information about how to compile linux kernel and than install RTAI.

P.S. sorry I had to remove http before every link because I am new to this forum and it does not allow me to post links
