So do u think Linux has changed much? If so then for better or worse?
- 02-10-2005 #4
It has changed, a lot.
Something for better some for worst.
In those days (Slackware v1) linux was small.
Take mandrake or Fedora or Suse distro's these days.
They're huge monstars compared to Slack V1.
(Hack, it's comparing Apples to Oranges, I know... but you'll get the idea.)
But I think that Linux is on the corner of breaking through, you'll see specialist distro's, workstation, Home / Work, Server ; Home / Work. etc. etc
I'm curious, we'll have to wait and see.---[ MS09-99896 - Vulnerability in All MS Windows OS ; Using Windows Could Allow Remote Code Execution. ]---

Hmm...first used Red Hat (4 or 5 i think) back at University, about 5 years ago. Bugged to jiggery, as i recall (mostly due to departmental tinkering). Definitely come a long way, even in that time.

I had my first encounter with GNU/Linux back in 1998.

Since Redhat 6, IIRC. Probably about 5 or 6 years. Linux has definitely improved since those days. Distributions like SuSE have made it less of a "riding by the seat of your pants" thrill to install it, but I suppose given the choice between a stable, fully configured install every time and the hit-and-miss "it could hose your whole system or not" experience that I had back in those days, I'll take the shiny installer.

Redhat 6 was my first adventure with Linux at school.
Suse 7.2 was my first at home.
