ok so there is alot and that is an understatement. but really what could be the difference in them. you can only get some many that would be different then you would start to run into distros that are the same except the name.i dont know maybe thats me but i have only really tryed redhat mandrake suse and i will be trying slack as soon as i get home since i finally got it running. but i guess there is so many cause anyone can create there own version. and someday i plan on having my own distro. but like that will happen
i mean i have way to many plans like that.

each distro will have its little differences, but at the end of the day, linux is linux

in many cases i think it is just the author of the distro who has customised it to meet his/her particuar style, then made available for download.

yeah thats what i was thinking. yeah i think they are all basicly the same. even more so know that i can get slackware and collegelinux to install. but im jst messing around with a bunch of distros for my server but the one im using for on my laptop will probably stay redhat for along time unless i find something better. or untill i have created my own Linux.

Upside
The one aspect of Redhat is you'll never be very far from someone who knows its or has used it in the past and help is near. Its a very common starting point for most linux users both new and old hands.
Downside
They want to be the next M$.Dan
