I started off on SuSE, and had very few problems that a quick post on here couldn't solve. (if i couldn't work it out myself)

I hope the original poster isn't trying to use this poll to actually decide anything, since I imagine every single person on the forum has a different opinion about it. For me personally, the distro I find the easiest to do every day tasks in and tweak to my liking is SuSE.
That's different from what I'd say if someone asked "what's the easiest distro for someone new to Linux". That in my opinion is a loaded question, since some people think Calculus is easier than Discrete Mathematics or swimming freestyle is easier than swimming backstroke. (Just FYI, I vote Discrete Math and backstroke as easier.)
I find SuSE "easiest" for me because the underlying operating system is stable enough that I don't have to fix it; I just run it and concentrate on other things. They also provide some convenient tools such as YaST that make otherwise tedious tasks (like updating my bootloader, adding/removing packages, or upgrading hardware) much more automated and less frustrating. This is by no means what everyone looks for in an OS, just me at this particular point in my life.Registered Linux user #270181

i was dude i would think start off on would be that...
- 04-13-2005 #7Well, if you're just looking for somewhere to start (meaning you're going to try lots of distros and see which appeals to *you*), then that's great and it really doesn't matter IMO which one you choose first. I highly recommend trying as many as possible in whatever order you see fit until you find one that just knocks your socks off.

Gentoo!! :-p.
Personally, I use SuSE and love it with all my heart, I think that Mandrake was a bit better for a beginner. The installer is about as simple as humanly possible, and package installation doesn't have to worry about YaST outdated-ness, as you can just download RPMs from anywhere. Also, urpmi is easy to use via the terminal.
But SuSE is far better than Mandrake overall.
Hrmm...do we have to start calling it Mandriva now? Grr.DISTRO=Arch
