The "windows is crap" thread
LOL ... i just finished reading that thread, and had a hearty laugh. Although it's just pointless bickering, it never ceases to amuse me when someone starts a Linux vs. Windows debate. IMHO Window$ sucks ass - and for too many reasons to even list. But that doesn't mean our job is to start a holy war, i just came here to talk about our fave O/S and maybe learn some new tricks & tips.
But man... posting a message on a Linux board saying "What's so bad about Windows?" and then blabing about it being faster etc.... Sheesh!! makes you wonder what the person was thinking!
What's your opinion?PTL x10 Hallelujah!

I agree with you GNU_man.
I much prefer to discuss the finer points of my favorite OS, and try to stay out of those posts.
Though if somebody asks a windows question i will help them, I just like helping people. How to know if you are a geek.

thought the same mate. wondered if it was a piece of satire at first

dont think anyone can honestly sit there and tell me that windows isnt that expensive. all you have to do is buy it (£130) and then anti-virus (£29) and anti spyware (£???) and spend hours maintaining it, all of this with a straight face! great stuff. kept me laughing.
i know what you mean about the holy war thing. i used to see all these windows people as poor misled souls who needed saving. after a few failed attempts at linuxyfying these sinners, i realised the error of my ways when the majority of people just dont give a dam about pc's, arent willing to learn and dont care about the fact that there £130 OS is leaking like 20yr old guttering and collecting lakes of malware.
hey, its their money and their call. all i do now is let them know they have alternatives, if they care enough they'll do what we've all done and get out there and experiment. You know, aliens are going to come to earth in 50 years and kill the hell out of us for DDoSing their networks with this SETI crap

But when i started spreading the gospel of Linux i quicklyi used to see all these windows people as poor misled souls who needed saving. after a few failed attempts at linuxyfying these sinners, i realised the error of my ways when the majority of people just dont give a dam about pc's
realized that the average PC user doesn't give a flip about an O/S - mostly because they are using a pirated copy of XP that was also free. But i think this is going to change as M$ is really cracking down on that. Soon, i believe, you will be forced to verify (online scan) for valid Windows b4 getting any updates.
And we all know how important these, almost daily, 'critical updates' are. Basicly the crappy-ass OS falls apart at the seams if it's endless bugs and security holes are not continualy patched up
I can only conclude that once again the shoddy, poor quality of the Window$ OS, is going to ultimately turn to the advantage to M$. >sigh<PTL x10 Hallelujah!

I seriously thought that whole bit was a tongue in cheek joke. Guess I was wrong.
I've learned, to my surprise, that most of my friends and family have absolutely zero interest in using Linux. These are all very intelligent and tech savvy people that look at me as if I've grown a second head when I start talking about Linux. Most of my friends and family work in the IT sector. Its amazing to me that they aren't falling all over themselves to learn more. The more I talk about it, the more glazed their eyes become. I repeat jokes I've seen on here that are hilarious, and its like I'm speaking in tongues.
Does anyone else get this, or is it just me?

I don't know GNU_man, I think most computer users do care about their operating system, whether they know it or not. I'm not talking power users here (their case is obvious), but pure users who have no care of how the operating system works. I can't tell you how many times I hear from friends and family, "why does that have to be there, I don't want that!", or, "why do I have to do all that just to get here, when it's the thing I do most?" Obviously they're not quite so calm as my paraphrases, and that's not even getting into the typical 6 month slowdown of a Windows install, the crashes, or the security.
I was a crusader too, but it didn't work. What I do now is wait for people to complain, because it's inevitable, and I explain to them how and why this isn't a problem in OSS. It's not about trying to change people's minds anymore for me, it's about helping them learn and find a better way. Just today a customer was complaining about identity theft and how if she gets a new computer she might not even get online. Of course I pimped Firefox, and explained that it's not failsafe, especially if she still uses Windows, but the vast majority of exploits aren't geared for Mozilla browsers. I got the impression she left with a somewhat fresh attitude towards computers, and she may even come back asking about Linux some day. It gives me a good feeling
In Microsoft's defense, they're stuck in the status quo. They've grown beyond their wildest dreams, and you can't hope to keep track of all the unique software for their OS. They're desperately behind in consolidation and simplification of code, and they have limited resources to accomplish it with. If they opened their code, or at least let people pick and choose components to install, the community could help very quickly. But Microsoft is Microsoft, they can't just change who they are. Oh well, we have FOSS.Michael Salivar

- 06-07-2005 #10It seems like almost everyone who knows that i'm a computer geek says thegetting into the typical 6 month slowdown of a Windows install, the crashes, or the security.
same thing - something like this:
"I think my computer needs a tune-up or something. It's gotten really slow etc etc"
then they look at me as if waiting for me to volunteer to fix it up for free!
My usual response is: "Yup, that's Windows. You have two choices, change O/S or live with it. I recommend Linux. There are some really user-friendly distros out there now."
But i say it with reservations, for this reason: Most people are generaly lazy, unless doing somthing they are really interested it. Installing OS's is usually not one of them. I can't help but forsee phone call after phone call from one of these people saying How do i do ____? or ____? why is my ____ not working now? Can you come over and help me?
Hmmm... i think i would just rather hear them ***** about Window$
