Hehe AOL's so like... ten years ago...

AOL was popular for like two or three years. Then a cable provider came to town and AOL died. Then a crappy company called Comcast bought the good ISP and the connection went down at least once every two months

never had AOL. glad I didn't. a few friends of mine did, and all the time they would complain.

One of my friends had AOL.
I uninstalled it for him.
He was so glad to get out of what he called AOhell

I was with Compuserver when it first came out, 80s I think - 300 baud paid by the minute. No WWW. They had "special interest group" forums that were most useful. My favorite one was for the Radio Shack Model 100. There was a 3rd party DOS software package called Tapcis that automated the upload / download of messages that minimized online time. I still have it somewhere in the garage. PS. I still have a couple of Model 100s, the first laptop.

I had that account, 70035,1412 for many years. I even kept it after I had a dialup shell account and then had one of the first Mosaic browsers. I think I paid $100 just for the browser back in 90's dollars. What a ride.

At the university I attended, we surfed the web with gopher. It was much like a text based browser like lynx. It was pretty cool but you could list the original sites on a page or two.

Once AOL bought out Compuserve it really went down hill. I have tried AOL several times but prefer a direct connection that doesn't have their silly interface.

Yeah, the interface reminds me of the "3web" ad window based ISP i used way back. Their motto was 'free internet for life, so don't go dying on us."

... Then 2 weeks later, they sent everyone a message saying that they couldn't afford to offer free internet anymore along with a pay-up-or-****-off message ... looks like they ended up dying on us

You could uninstall it... omg! I bet that took you a while. Freaken broken reg keys, lost folders left behind...

I never had it but I was a tech a few years back and I can say.... I never want to go through that pain again. I have not touched it in a long time but I can tell you I would back every thing needed up and reinstall the OS. For me that would be less trouble and take less time.

I uninstalled AOL on 2 pc's.
Onet took a couple hours, but I managed to get all of it. That person did not have AOL for very long.
The other one was a different story. He had been using AOL for years.
After a couple of hours, I backed everything up and reinstalled Win98.
