    has anyone every used solaris? the cs department at my school just switched all the machines over and I was thinking of doing it too...just for kicks. If all the labs I work on have it I may as well have it at home to.

    Just wanted to know what everyone though of it.

    I have only used Solaris once or twice, but I didnt really like it.

    our company experimented with it for some time during software testing

    Never tried it myself but have heard it reffered to as Slowlaris Now that it's open source (i think) maybe i'll check it out.

    I currently run a Solaris server, great UNIX operating system. Perhaps you should try it in VMware before doing a complete switch since Sun has released x86 version of 10 already, which is also free.

    How compatible is Solaris with open source software?

    It may be a pain in the neck if you can't easily find software for it.

    Software you can find. It's hardware drivers that become an issue. All this has been discussed in the thread I posted above.

    OpenSolaris isn't a distro per se yet, although SchilliX is:http://schillix.berlios.de/ the first OpenSolaris based distro, which is a LiveCD format. Blastwave, and NetBSD pkgsrc offer pkg mngr solutions for the Solaris platform.
