longhorn, will you get it?
i'm curious to see how many people want to get longhorn. to be honest i've got no plans to get it. i think it will be based on the NT line still (for "backwards compatibility"). even if it is a whole new windows architecture which threatens to destroy backwards compatibility to older versions, effectively forcing us to upgrade, then i will stop using windows altogether and rely on linux for my computing needs.
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

I will absolutly not use Longhorn, I might have to use it if my teacher complains about using SLAX in school. According to what I have read about it so far it is just plain old Windows XP (that actually is Windows 3.1) with a new look.

No - I won't use it: definitely not interested.

I decided after getting a free copy of XP from my university that I was not going to buy any Microsoft OS that came after. If Longhorn is incompatible with XP software (or vice versa) so much the better; it gives me no excuse other than old games to keep my XP install around.
I don't see Longhorn as being that big a deal anyway; they've stripped all the whiz-bang new features they promised so it will really just be a massive XP Service Pack, that costs as much as an upgrade of course.

Not a chance! I already have software that isn't compatible with the exiting version that I had to upgrade to. It's too expensive to upgrade.

Right now, I don't really see any reason for anyone to get longhorn. They've either pulled out almost everything that's supposed to be Longhorn-specific (WinFS, Monad, etc.) or backported it to Windows XP (Indigo, WinFX, .NET, etc.), so it seems that Longhorn will more-or-less be Windows XP with a new skin.
I got some screenshots of Longhorn as it looks right now just yesterday. It seems they were taken down from where I got them (they were slashdotted, so I think they pulled them down to save their server), so I've put them up on my homepage:
http://www.dolda2000.com/~fredrik/lf/lh/
The `install' directory contains screenshots of the Longhorn installer, and the `post' directory contains screenshots of it installed and running.
I'll admt that it does look pretty neat, but if that's all it does, then it's not exactly very impressive. And I still don't think that it looks as good as OSX.
Edit: Explained the subdirectories.
